New Mexico Governor to Legislature: Legalize Recreational Marijuana This Year

In her 2020 agenda, which she sent to NM lawmakers yesterday, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) indicates that she wants the legislature to legalize recreational cannabis in New Mexico. An article on the Forbes site says that if the legislature follows her direction and submits a bill to legalize weed in their next session, New Mexico is likely to be the next state to legalize adult-use.

While running for governor in 2018, Lujan Grisham voiced her support for cannabis legalization, and she is following through on that promise. A bill to approve adult-use in New Mexico failed to pass last year, and the governor formed a working group to study the issue afterward. The group’s final recommendations included expungement of cannabis related conviction records as well as support for communities that have been targeted during the “war on drugs.”
