According to a story posted on Cannabis Wire, as many as nine medical associations are actively lobbying to encourage congress on weed-related issues, including the STATES Act, research, and medical cannabis access. These include the American Cancer Society, American Psychological Association, the American Academy of Neurology, and others.

The STATES Act, which protects state-legal cannabis businesses from federal intervention, is a focus of several of the associations, including the Epilepsy Foundation and the United Spinal Association. They argue that the instability caused by the conflict between federal and some state regulations is keeping patients from comfortably purchasing the medication they need.

Some of the associations are more focused on research, such as the Epilepsy Foundation, which is seeking answers to how cannabis may benefit epilepsy patients.
