A bill that could be introduced to West Virginia lawmakers as early as next week would decriminalize marijuana use. According to an article from CBS/Fox 59, the bill, named the “Normalizing Cannabis Act” is expected to be introduced by West Virginia Delegate Sammi Brown (D). Her bill is a remaking of a bill introduced last year, House Bill 3108.

The new bill would allow for legal adult-use and focuses on criminal justice reforms, including expungements for certain cannabis possession convictions. Brown faces stiff opposition from her Republican colleagues however, including one who is quoted in the article as saying, “To just simply say something is no longer going to be illegal I think is very imprudent. If we were going to take that route, why wouldn’t we just decriminalize heroin and any other drug.”
